STATEHOUSE NEWS
Milestones are important, and 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the completion of the Ohio Statehouse restoration project—“A Capitol Revival.” Since 1996 the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) has preserved the historical and political heritage of the State of Ohio, the Ohio Statehouse and Capitol Square. Also, CSRAB has protected the huge investment made by the citizens of Ohio to restore the Ohio Capitol to its 1860 grandeur. Throughout the year CSRAB will celebrate the 20th anniversary of “A Capitol Revival” with special events and historical exhibits. In 2016, come to the Ohio Statehouse and help celebrate “20 Years of Preservation!”
CSRAB educates the tens of thousands of citizens that tour the Statehouse annually, facilitates the function of state government and the Ohio General Assembly (OGA) and protects the historical integrity of the Statehouse while at the same time, ensuring the safety of those who work in and visit the Ohio Capitol. The Ohio Statehouse offers a wide range of exhibits and events for families and individuals of all ages.

The Statehouse Museum Shop will host two book signings Wed., Dec. 16, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse featuring Representative Michael F. Curtin, Joe Hallett and Jim Heath. Both titles are available for purchase in the Statehouse Museum Shop.
Rep. Curtin, a former reporter, editor, associate publisher, chief operating officer, and vice chairman at the Columbus Dispatch and current member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Mr. Hallett, a longtime Ohio political reporter, will be signing their new, third edition of “The Ohio Politics Almanac.” The revised and updated edition features electoral maps, charts and statistical analyses of Ohio’s presidential and gubernatorial elections, along with county-by-county profiles —this is the “Bible” of Ohio politics.
New to this edition is the emphasis on electoral politics, featuring the gubernatorial and presidential maps for the last 10 election cycles. The Almanac now contains maps and charts that illustrate and analyze the outcomes of presidential and gubernatorial elections statewide, by region and by county. The new material offers even more insight into why Ohio has become America’s bellwether and a fulcrum state in presidential races—a must-win prize in modern national elections.
Mr. Heath, a former battleground Ohio political journalist, will sign his new book “Front Row Seat at the Circus: One Journalist’s Journey through Two Presidential Elections.” Heath, who was the political reporter and moderator of Capitol Square on WBNS 10TV, took a year off from his television career to write the book detailing his experiences covering presidential campaigns. “I had too many great campaign stories from both South Carolina and Ohio not to write this book,” said Heath.
The book has received rave reviews from national journalists, politicians and pundits. “It's a tour de force of American politics,” said Jeff Zeleny, CNN’s Senior Washington Correspondent. "Jim’s insights are colorful and conversational, and the background becomes the foreground for the wild rides that elections provide,” added Rick Klein, Political Director for ABC News.
Experts from both sides of the political aisle have rated it high too. Kevin Madden, a Senior Advisor and Spokesman for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, said:
"Presidential campaigns are more grit than glamour, and Jim Heath has woven together a sharp and perceptive account of America’s political battlegrounds and the pivotal role these corners of the country play in the selection of the leader of the free world. ‘Front Row Seat at the Circus’ is the work of a tenacious reporter, with an eye for bringing to life the colorful characters and local electoral customs shaping the pageantry of presidential politics. The book takes readers behind the pipe and drape of the event stage and lets them witness campaign life in raw form."
"Jim understands that while circuses have plenty of clowns, they have moments of great artistry as well. He reports on both, never succumbs to cynicism, and provides us a window into what makes the best politicians--and the best journalists--tick," said David Wilhelm, former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and the Campaign Manager for Bill Clinton for President in 1992.
Both titles are a must read for any Buckeye state politicos. The book signings will be held Wed., Dec. 16, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse.

The Statehouse Museum Shop in partnership with The Book Loft will host a book signing featuring Karl Rove Wed., Dec. 9, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse. Mr. Rove’s new release, “The Triumph of William McKinley,” is available for purchase in the Statehouse Museum Shop.
Mr. Rove will be signing his new book, “The Triumph of William McKinley.” The book details the 1896 campaign in which Ohioan William McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan for the presidency. Offering a new view of President William McKinley’s administration, the book highlights McKinley's revolutionary political strategies and campaign tactics that both parties can find informative in today’s political landscape.
Mr. Rove explains why McKinley and the campaign of 1896 are still relevant, “The challenges of 1896 are similar to those of today: A rapidly changing electorate affected by a growing immigrant population; an uncertain economy disrupted by new technologies; growing income inequality; and contentious issues the two major parties could not resolve. McKinley found ways to address these challenges and win, which is why his campaign is so relevant to our politics now.”
The book signing will be held Wed., Dec. 9, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse.
Order “The Triumph of William McKinley.”
The book signing with Joe Hallett and Mike Curtin has been rescheduled for December 16; further details will be forthcoming about this event.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) will provide 75 school transportation grants to visit the Ohio Statehouse and its museum during the 2015-2016 academic year.
The online application process will open Mon., Nov. 9, 2015 at 9 a.m. The grants will be made available to help schools defray bus transportation costs to the Ohio Statehouse. Each awarded grant will be based on one-way mileage from the visiting school to Columbus. The program was created in 2009 by the Capitol Square Foundation. Since the program’s inception, more than 75,000 students from all 88 Ohio counties have visited the Ohio Statehouse with the help of this grant program. “We are grateful for the continued support from Honda of America," said Charles Moses, Capitol Square Foundation Chairman, “civics education comes alive at the Ohio Statehouse!"
A total of 75 grants will be awarded: 25 grants in three mileage categories. The mileage categories are for a one-way trip from the visiting school to the Ohio Statehouse. "The transportation grant program provides thousands of Ohio school children with a learning experience here at the Ohio Statehouse," said William E. Carleton, CSRAB executive director, “we are teaching the future leaders of Ohio.”
The three mileage categories include:
- 1 to 50 miles, $ 200.00
- 51 to 100 miles, $ 300.00
- 101+ miles, $ 400.00
Each category will be closed once the 25 available grants have been awarded. All grants will be awarded on a first come-first served basis.
The school transportation grants will be available to any Ohio school that receives state funding. The grants are limited to Ohio students in the fourth through 12th grades during the 2015-2016 academic year. Only one transportation grant will be awarded to each school regardless of the number of buses or students visiting the Ohio Statehouse. A field trip to the Ohio Statehouse can be combined with visits to other educational attractions in downtown Columbus, including the Ohio Art Council’s Riffe Gallery, Columbus Museum of Art, COSI and the Ohio Judicial Center.
Once the application process opens Mon., Nov. 9—only online applications will be accepted. All applications must be submitted by an authorized teacher or school administrator. Applications will be accepted until every grant is awarded.
Detailed information about the program is available at:
