The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation today announce the recipients of the 2016 “Great Ohioans Award.” The 2016 honorees were presented by the Capitol Square Foundation and unanimously approved by the CSRAB board. The three individuals were selected from nominations submitted by citizens and organizations throughout Ohio.

The 2016 Great Ohioans are: Jack Nicklaus, professional golfer and entrepreneur, John D. Rockefeller, industrialist and philanthropist and Potter Stewart, U.S. Supreme Court justice.

“As we mark the 20th anniversary of the completion of the Ohio Statehouse restoration in 2016, I believe this class of Great Ohioans will serve to inspire future generations of Ohio leaders and represents the great wealth of talent that the Buckeye State has produced since statehood in 1803,” said Speaker of the Ohio House Cliff Rosenberger, Chairman of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board.

The Great Ohioan Award commemorates Ohioans who have played a significant role in an event or series of events of lasting significance in World, American or Ohio history. To be selected for the Great Ohioan Award, the nominee must have resided in Ohio for a minimum of five years. In addition, at least 25 years must have passed since the event in which the nominee participated is being commemorated.

BIOGRAPHIES OF THE 2016 GREAT OHIOAN AWARD WINNERS

Potter Stewart
Potter Stewart, U.S. Supreme Court justice, was born in Jackson, Michigan, the son of James Garfield Stewart, a chief justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, and Harriet Loomis Potter. Stewart was chairman of the undergraduate newspaper at Yale University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1937 and a law degree in 1941. After serving during World War II as a naval officer and attaining the rank of lieutenant junior grade, he entered private practice and local politics in Cincinnati
.
In 1954, when Stewart was only 39, he was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served until his retirement in 1981. Although he had a background in Ohio Republican politics and was appointed to the Supreme Court by a Republican president known for his antipathy to judicial liberalism, Stewart was not a conservative justice. Rather, he followed a moderate, pragmatic approach that defied easy categorization. He believed that he should approach each case on its merits, without striving to further an ideological agenda. Over time, his practical approach marked him as a centrist who adhered to no particular wing of the court.

Stewart's 23-year tenure on the Supreme Court roughly coincided with the eras of chief justices Earl Warren and Warren Burger. On the Warren Court, Stewart frequently stood outside the prevailing liberal consensus, particularly on matters concerning state criminal law enforcement. His centrist inclinations meant, however, that he also declined to align himself with the Burger court's occasionally aggressive pursuit of politically conservative causes.

In 1968, when Warren announced his intention to retire, Stewart removed himself from consideration for the position of chief justice, mindful of the internal dissension that had been generated when members of the court previously had sought the position. He later played a significant role in formulating the court's unanimous opinion in Nixon v. United States (1974), which ordered President Richard M. Nixon to surrender to the special prosecutor the tape recordings whose disclosure later led Nixon to resign. He died in Hanover, New Hampshire.

John D. Rockefeller
John Davison Rockefeller Sr. was an American industrialist and philanthropist. He was a co-founder of the Standard Oil Company, which dominated the oil industry and was the first great U.S. business trust. Rockefeller revolutionized the petroleum industry, and along with other key contemporary businessmen such as Andrew Carnegie, defined the structure of modern philanthropy. In 1870, he founded Standard Oil Company and actively ran it until he officially retired in 1897.

Rockefeller founded Standard Oil as an Ohio partnership with his brother William along with Henry Flagler, Jabez A. Bostwick, chemist Samuel Andrews, and a silent partner, Stephen V. Harkness. As kerosene and gasoline grew in importance, Rockefeller's wealth soared and he became the world's richest man and the first American worth more than a billion dollars, controlling 90% of all oil in the United States at his peak. Adjusting for inflation, his fortune upon his death in 1937 stood at $336 billion, accounting for more than 1.5% of the national economy, making him the richest person in U.S. history.

His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. He was able to do this through the creation of foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education and scientific research. His foundations pioneered the development of medical research and were instrumental in the eradication of hookworm and yellow fever.

Rockefeller was also the founder of both the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University and funded the establishment of Central Philippine University in the Philippines. He was a devoted Northern Baptist and supported many church-based institutions. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life. He was a faithful congregant of the Erie Street Baptist Mission Church, where he taught Sunday school, and served as a trustee, clerk, and occasional janitor. Religion was a guiding force throughout his life, and Rockefeller believed it to be the source of his success.

Jack Nicklaus
Jack William Nicklaus nicknamed "The Golden Bear", is a retired American professional golfer. He is widely regarded as the greatest professional golfer of all time, winning a total of 18 career major championships, while producing 19 second- place and 9 third-place finishes in them, over a span of 25 years. Nicklaus focused on the major championships (Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, Open Championship, and PGA Championship), and played a selective schedule of regular PGA Tour events, yet still finished with 73 victories, third on the all-time list behind Sam Snead (82) and Tiger Woods (79).

After winning two U.S. Amateurs in 1959 and 1961, and challenging for the 1960 U.S. Open (he finished in second place, two shots behind winner Arnold Palmer), Nicklaus turned professional at age 21 toward the end of 1961. The 1962 U.S. Open was both Nicklaus' first major championship victory and his first professional win. This win over Arnold Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two golf superstars. In 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this, and also won The Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. At age 26, he became the youngest to do so at the time. In 1968 and 1969, Nicklaus did not win a major tournament. He then won another Open Championship in 1970.

Between 1971 and 1980, he would win an additional nine major championships, overtake Bobby Jones' record of 13 majors, and become the first player to complete double and triple career slams of golf's four professional major championships. At the age of 46, Nicklaus claimed his 18th and final major championship at the 1986 Masters Tournament, becoming that championship's oldest winner.

Nicklaus has also taken part in various off-course activities, including golf course design, charity work and book writing. Nicklaus is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and has helped design courses such as Harbour Town Golf Links. Nicklaus also runs his own tournament on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world. Nicklaus' books vary from instructional to autobiographical, with his Golf My Way considered one of the best instructional golf books of all time; the video of the same name is the best-selling golf instructional to date.

Since 2003, 39 other Great Ohioans have been recognized with the award for the special roles they played in history. “This year we honor three individuals who have left their mark on Ohio and the nation. Through superb work and performance in athletics, business, philanthropy and law all three honorees have earned the title of Great Ohioan,” said William Carleton CSRAB executive director.

“Through their accomplishments, each Great Ohioan has changed the trajectory of the State of Ohio, the United State and the world. We hope that every Statehouse visitor is inspired by the life and accomplishments of each one of the men and women who have been recognized with this honor,” said Capitol Square Foundation Chairman Charles Moses.

Great Ohioan honorees and their achievements are archived in a permanent Great Ohioan exhibit, which is part of the Ohio Statehouse Museum. While countless Ohioans have performed great actions for their community and beyond, only a select few have been named a “Great Ohioan.” This exhibit allows visitors to have a greater understanding of the recipients of the Great Ohioan award and discover how they affected local, national and world history. The exhibit uses videos, photos, facts and web based technology to explore the life and legacy of each Great Ohioan.

Opened in 2009, the Ohio Statehouse Museum features high-tech, interactive exhibits that make learning about all three branches of state government immersive. The museum is packed with historical artifacts and images that detail how government works and who has come to serve their fellow citizens.

The Museum includes 5,000 square feet of exhibit space on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse that enriches the experience of school children and visitors. The Museum offers exhibits that encourage visitors to participate in the government process by making choices, expressing their opinions, comparing viewpoints and even becoming a part of an exhibit by giving a State of the State address. The museum’s “deep dive” approach to education enables visitors to better relate to the governing process.

The Distracted Driver Simulator features a computer-generated simulation of texting while driving. The set-up includes a steering wheel, turn indicators, gas and brake pedals. After “buckling up,” the driver takes the wheel and tries to drive with distractions. ODOT uses the simulator as a tool to educate young drivers and the public about the dangers of distracted driving.

Dayton, Ohio, native Lewis G. Reynolds founded the Carnation League of America in 1903. The League encouraged all Americans to wear a red carnation on William McKinley’s birthday, January 29. President William McKinley was assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo two years prior. McKinley’s favorite flower was said to be the carnation. The observance will include a small exhibit on the history of Carnation Day and the life and legacy of Ohio Governor and President William McKinley.

The Statehouse will also offer special discounts throughout the day in the Museum Shop and Capitol Cafe for individuals wearing a red carnation or dressed in scarlet.

General John C. Caldwell and the Lincoln Funeral Train

General John Curtis Caldwell answered the call of duty at the outbreak of the American Civil War. As a brigade commander and eventual corps commander of the Army of the Potomac, he participated in some of the most ferocious fighting between the North and South. Travelling with the Union army from one battlefront to the next, Caldwell was wounded twice.

On April 20, 1865, General Caldwell received a letter from the War Department advising him that he had been appointed to the "Guard of Honor" that was to accompany President Lincoln’s remains "from the city of Washington to Springfield, Illinois, and continue with them until they are consigned to their final resting-place."

A partial list of objects in the exhibit are: a War Department pass for the President Lincoln’s funeral train, a silver tassel from the president’s catafalque, a mourning badge and ribbon and a funeral time table from the slain president’s Columbus repose.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board will commemorate the repose of President Abraham Lincoln in the Ohio Capitol Friday, April 29, 2016. The 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A, a group of Civil War re-enactors, will provide an honor guard for a replica of Lincoln’s casket from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This will take place on the site where the slain President lay in state in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda on April 29, 1865.

Also, learn what camp life was like during the Civil War. Walk among soldiers’ tents, see how to fire the cannon every hour and help the Ladies Aid Society deliver comfort to the troops. Historical re-enactors from 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A and other groups will demonstrate Civil War life, cooking and medical practices—fun for the whole family! This program is supported by the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A.

As a congressionally designated depository for U.S. Government Publications and the depository for state government publications, the State Library works with the Government Documents Round Table of Ohio (GODORT) to promote the effective use of publications issued by all levels of government. Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, GODORT addresses concerns and problems affecting access to government publications. Reminiscent of barnstorming tours of yesteryear, the match begins at 5:30 p.m., as the Capitol Cannons challenge the Ohio Village Muffins in an exhibition game of vintage “base ball.” The event is free and open to the public. Celebrate the Ohio Statehouse and take a step back to the 1800’s with an exhibition game as the Ohio Village Historical Muffins battle members of the Ohio General Assembly on the west lawn of Capitol Square. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and come to the “People’s House” to enjoy the hour-long old-time base ball (originally two words) game.

After the base ball game, stay and enjoy a cannon firing demonstration. Come early to choose your spot as concessions will be available. The 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A will provide cannon fire demonstrations as part of the event.Sponsorship provided by the Ohio Lobbying Association.

Join dozens of plein-air artists as they converge on Capitol Square. Artists throughout Ohio will “choose a spot” on Capitol Square and paint in the tradition of plein air. En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Ohio Statehouse visitors are invited to visit with artists from Central Ohio Plein Air as they create their works of art. Artwork created during this day will be placed on exhibit in the Ohio Statehouse throughout the month of July. Some artwork will be available for purchase in the Statehouse Museum Shop. The Ohio Statehouse Museum and Education Center invites you to attend Statehouse Boy Scout Merit Badge Day. Come learn about Ohio government and history and earn the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge at the Ohio Statehouse. The Ohio Statehouse is the state’s Capitol, a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Scouts and parents are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch as space will be provided. The program includes a tour of the Ohio Statehouse given by Statehouse historian Chris Matheney. Mr. Matheney will be your Merit Badge counselor for the program following the tour.

The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. with registration in the Governor Thomas Worthington Center on the lower level of the Statehouse. Counseling sessions will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a great way to learn about Ohio government and history while earning the Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge.

In honor of the Republican National Convention, held in Cleveland July 18-21, the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center, in partnership with the American Political Items Collectors, will showcase treasures from the political careers of Ohio’s eight presidents and their campaigns.

While the campaign button is the most recognized and widely collected of all campaign objects, the exhibit also includes rare vintage political ribbons, ferrotypes, glassware, autographs, books, textiles, ephemera, posters, medals, tokens, postcards, pennants, sheet music and photography. Campaign artifacts range from matchbooks to street banners and everything in between!

Ohio’s Presidents include: William Henry Harrison (1841), Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877), Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881), James A. Garfield (1881), Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), William McKinley (1897-1901), William Howard Taft (1909-1913) and Warren G. Harding (1921-1923).

The American Political Items Collectors (APIC) is a non-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the collection, preservation and study of materials relating to political campaigns and the U.S. presidency. Founded in 1945, the APIC serves a growing hobby. Membership includes collectors and enthusiasts from all walks of life and nearly every occupation. The APIC cooperates with the Smithsonian, presidential libraries, homes, birthplaces and museums, national and local media as well as colleges and universities to facilitate the understanding of American politics using the artifacts of political campaigns. This incredible program incorporates History, Art, Science, English, Math, Economics, Music, and Medicine of the American Revolution time period (1775-1783). Students from Arch-Bishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio present this living history program which focuses on the Yorktown Campaign—that final crucial victory that secured our country’s freedom. Students will enlist in the Continental Army, study trajectories, print a Continental Congress broadside on a printing press, taste camp food, practice military drill, play period camp instruments, and visit with General George Washington. This program is geared toward fourth and fifth-grade students.

The Ohio Statehouse, in partnership with Keep Ohio Beautiful, the Scotts-Miracle Gro Company, Subaru and the Davey Resources Group, will celebrate National Planting Day. The celebration will include a short ceremony and planting of native species on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse and information displays. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place indoors in the Ohio Statehouse Atrium. National Planting Day celebrates the value and power of native species in restoring ecological balance to the environment, while creating greener, more beautiful communities and landscapes. Since native species are losing ground to suburbanization, fragmented habitats, ornamental plants and invasive species, National Planting Day partners will use the Ohio Statehouse grounds to highlight native species. Native species are critical to attracting specialized pollinators and insects, which in turn provide food for birds and ultimately many more animals up the food chain.

It’s that time of the year again to grab your entire family, your friends and bring some holiday cheer to celebrate the Ohio Statehouse Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting. This year’s celebration will take place Tuesday, December 1, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This free family-friendly event is open to the public!

The festival marks the beginning of the holiday season on Capitol Square and throughout all of central Ohio. The indoor ceremony will take place in the Statehouse Atrium and consist of a short program, welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus, followed by the lighting of our historically decorated holiday tree. The festivities will then continue with refreshments, arts and crafts activities, games and special performances by local choirs. There will also be a free photo station available to capture your families’ moment with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Statehouse Museum Shop will host two book signings Wed., Dec. 16, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse featuring Representative Michael F. Curtin, Joe Hallett and Jim Heath. Both titles are available for purchase in the Statehouse Museum Shop.

Rep. Curtin, a former reporter, editor, associate publisher, chief operating officer, and vice chairman at the Columbus Dispatch and current member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Mr. Hallett, a longtime Ohio political reporter, will be signing their new, third edition of “The Ohio Politics Almanac.” The revised and updated edition features electoral maps, charts and statistical analyses of Ohio’s presidential and gubernatorial elections, along with county-by-county profiles —this is the “Bible” of Ohio politics.

New to this edition is the emphasis on electoral politics, featuring the gubernatorial and presidential maps for the last 10 election cycles. The Almanac now contains maps and charts that illustrate and analyze the outcomes of presidential and gubernatorial elections statewide, by region and by county. The new material offers even more insight into why Ohio has become America’s bellwether and a fulcrum state in presidential races—a must-win prize in modern national elections.

Mr. Heath, a former battleground Ohio political journalist, will sign his new book “Front Row Seat at the Circus: One Journalist’s Journey through Two Presidential Elections.” Heath, who was the political reporter and moderator of Capitol Square on WBNS 10TV, took a year off from his television career to write the book detailing his experiences covering presidential campaigns. “I had too many great campaign stories from both South Carolina and Ohio not to write this book,” said Heath.

The Statehouse Museum Shop in partnership with The Book Loft will host a book signing featuring Karl Rove Wed., Dec. 9, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse. Mr. Rove’s new release, “The Triumph of William McKinley,” is available for purchase in the Statehouse Museum Shop.

Mr. Rove will be signing his new book, “The Triumph of William McKinley.” The book details the 1896 campaign in which Ohioan William McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan for the presidency. Offering a new view of President William McKinley’s administration, the book highlights McKinley's revolutionary political strategies and campaign tactics that both parties can find informative in today’s political landscape.

Mr. Rove explains why McKinley and the campaign of 1896 are still relevant, “The challenges of 1896 are similar to those of today: A rapidly changing electorate affected by a growing immigrant population; an uncertain economy disrupted by new technologies; growing income inequality; and contentious issues the two major parties could not resolve. McKinley found ways to address these challenges and win, which is why his campaign is so relevant to our politics now.”

The book signing will be held Wed., Dec. 9, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse.

It’s almost that time of the year again to grab your loved ones and spread some holiday cheer at The Ohio Statehouse Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting. Save the date and join in on the fun at this year’s celebration Tues., Dec. 1, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This free family-friendly event is open to the public!

The festival marks the beginning of the holiday season on Capitol Square and throughout all of central Ohio. The indoor ceremony will consist of a short program, welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus, followed by the lighting of the historically-decorated State of Ohio holiday tree.

The festivities will then continue with some of Starbucks’ delicious refreshments, arts and crafts activities, games and special performances from local choirs. Come meet Lou Seal and Crash from the Clippers, and congratulate the team on winning the 2015 Governor’s Cup. Santa won’t be the only magical man here; “magician” Rory Rennick will be performing in the museum gallery. The Columbus Metropolitan Library will also be joining us this year for a holiday story read along, and of course there will be a free photo station available to capture your family’s special moment with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
