Ohio Statehouse offers special programming during Black History Month

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a special art exhibit and free historical performance each Tuesday at noon.

The 2018 Rosa Parks Children’s Art Exhibit, “The Power of One,” is a K-third grade student art exhibit sponsored by COTA. The exhibit is the students’ artistic expression of how they would change things for the better. Rosa Parks is honored because through her act of courage, she helped make America a better place for all people. Students were asked what would you do if you had a chance…To do a brave thing? A courageous thing? A kind thing? If nothing stood in your way, what would you do to change America and make it a better place for all people? The exhibit will be on display in the Map Room throughout the month of February.

The Voices of BGSU will perform live Friday, February 15 at noon in the Museum Gallery of the Ohio Statehouse. This award-winning a cappella group will perform a concert of spirituals and is comprised of undergraduate students from Bowling Green State University.

Living history performances will be presented each Tuesday at noon throughout February in the Atrium of the Ohio Statehouse. Visitors will meet first-person interpreters who portray prominent African Americans in U.S. history. Each 45-minute vignette will focus on African-American history as part of Black History Month at the Ohio Statehouse.

The programs are presented by “We’ve Known Rivers,” which is a partnership of dynamic storytellers with a passion for history and education. The programs are free and open to the public. Flags at the Ohio Statehouse lowered to half-staff

In honor of the life and service of Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods, flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on the day of his internment.

Ohio Statehouse to kickoff "Holiday Season" on Capitol Square

It’s that time of the year again to grab your entire family, friends and bring some holiday cheer to celebrate the Ohio Statehouse Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting. This year’s celebration will take place Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This free family-friendly event is open to the public!

The festival marks the beginning of the holiday season on Capitol Square and throughout central Ohio. The indoor ceremony will take place in the Statehouse Atrium and consist of a short program, welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus, followed by the lighting the Ohio Statehouse and our historically decorated holiday tree. The festivities will continue with refreshments, arts and crafts activities, games and special performances by local choirs and dancers. There will also be a free photo station available to capture your families’ moment with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Refreshments are courtesy of the Berwick, Bosc + Brie, Cameron Mitchell Premier Events, Freedom a la Cart, L.A. Catering, Made From Scratch, Metro Cuisine Catering & Special Events, Milo's Catering and Banquet Services and Two Caterers.

Ohio Constitution Exhibit to be Unveiled at Statehouse Event
November 21, 2018
Join the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) in partnership with the Ohio History Connection, as we unveil the Ohio Constitution exhibit in the Statehouse Museum. The program will take place Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the Museum Gallery of the Ohio Statehouse. The new exhibit features both the 1802 and 1851 Ohio constitutions on permanent public display at the Ohio Statehouse. Working together, this public-private partnership has produced an exhibit that is the first of its kind in the United States. Utilizing the original documents in conjunction with visitor-interactive displays, the exhibit will answer the questions, what is the Ohio constitution, what does it do and how does it impact Ohioans in the 21st century?

"Our Foundation and the CSRAB have been dedicated to enriching the experience of all who visit the Statehouse. This exhibit has been years in the making. Bringing the Ohio Constitution to the Museum for permanent display realizes a dream we have worked toward for more than a decade," said Charles R. Moses, CSF chairman. “This exhibit would not be possible without the collaboration and support provided by the Ohio History Connection.”

"Since our organization’s founding in 1885, we have cared for and preserved the Ohio Constitution documents. We understand the value of the stories they contain and we’re excited to connect even more Ohioans to the founding of our great state,” said Megan Wood, Ohio History Connection Director of Museum and Library Services.

When visitors enter the space, the experience begins with pages from the original 1802 and 1851 Ohio constitutions. Supporting the documents are interactives focused on “Rights,” “Responsibilities” and “Constitution Stories.”

“The Ohio Statehouse is grateful for the partnership with CSF and Ohio History Connection. The exhibit will educate Ohio students and visitors about the importance of these founding documents and how these documents impact their lives—the Statehouse is where Ohio civics and government come to life,” said Laura Battocletti, executive director of CSRAB. In addition to the new constitution exhibit, the entire museum has been updated with a new layout and expanded legislative gallery experience. The Worthington Center has received a new iCivics interactive activity designed for school groups visiting the Ohio Statehouse, as well.
