Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Saturday, September 9, 2017 in honor of the life and service of former State Senate President Harry Meshel.

Governor Kasich’s order reads:
“In honor of the life and service of former State Senate President Harry Meshel, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Mahoning County and at the Ohio Statehouse on September 9, 2017 from sunrise to sunset.”

Calling all teachers! Would you like to know more about the educational opportunities the Ohio Statehouse can provide you and your classroom? Stop by the Statehouse Saturday, September 16, 2017 from noon to 3 p.m., to find out all Capitol Square has to offer! During this informal open house, staff from the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and partnering organizations will provide materials, information, and short presentations about their educational resources available to you and your students. Educators will have the opportunity to learn about tours, digital resources, lesson plans, programs, and more.

Don’t want to miss weekend time with your family? They’re welcome, too! There are many family-friendly activities available at the Statehouse on the weekends, including public tours, scavenger hunts, special exhibitions, and a hands-on museum.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board has kicked off ticket sales for the 2017 edition of Haunted Statehouse Tours. The special Halloween tours will take place Fri., Oct. 20, Sat., Oct. 21, Fri., Oct. 27 and Sat., Oct. 28. Tickets for the Haunted Statehouse Tours are $12 for adults and $6 for children under the age of 12. This is a ticketed event. Tickets must be pre-ordered.

Tours will depart every half hour between 7 and 9 p.m. Tour times are: 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m. Tickets are limited to 40 individuals per tour start. The 2017 edition of the Haunted Statehouse Tours will feature recently found evidence of paranormal activity at the Ohio Capitol and will incorporate a new story or two with an updated tour route. This is a hot ticket on Capitol Square.

Ohio Statehouse staff members and volunteers will combine history and legend in this special family-friendly haunted Ohio Statehouse tour. Conductors will lead visitors through the dimly lit limestone corridors of the Ohio Statehouse by lantern. This historical tour is spooky and most appropriate for individuals nine and older.

Arrive early and write a “Ghost Post” to one of the Statehouse’s resident spirits, or enjoy art activities prior to your tour. The Statehouse Museum Shop will be open throughout the evening and will offer special Halloween merchandise available for purchase. More information is available at statehouseshop.com.

Visitors to the Ohio Statehouse are invited to park in the facility's underground parking garage. This convenient and affordable parking offers direct sheltered access to the Ohio Statehouse for this event. Parking fee is not included in ticket price. Governor Kasich’s order reads:
“In honor of the life and service of Chief Fire Controlman Gary L. Rehm, Jr., I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Lorain County and at the Ohio Statehouse on August 16, 2017 from sunrise to sunset.”

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) are pleased to announce that 75 school transportation grants will be awarded for the 2017/2018 academic year. The online application process will open Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 9 a.m. The grants will be made available to help schools defray bus transportation costs for field trips to the Ohio Statehouse and its museum. Each grant will be based on one-way mileage from the visiting school to Columbus. Grant applicants must have a minimum of 20 people in their group in order to receive transportation funding.


The program was created in 2009 by the Capitol Square Foundation. Since the program’s inception, more than 75,000 students from all 88 Ohio counties have visited the Ohio Statehouse with the help of this grant program. “The Foundation is grateful for the continued support from Honda of America," said Charles Moses, Capitol Square Foundation Chairman. “We are thrilled that so many students can visit the Ohio Statehouse through this program!"

25 grants will be awarded in each of three mileage categories. The mileage categories are for a one-way trip from the visiting school to the Ohio Statehouse.

The three mileage categories include:

• 1 to 50 miles, $200.00


• 51 to 100 miles, $300.00


• 101+ miles, $400.00

Each category will be closed once the 25 available grants have been awarded. All grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

"The transportation grant program provides thousands of Ohio school children with a learning experience here at the Ohio Statehouse," said Laura P. Battocletti, CSRAB executive director. “The Statehouse is the perfect place to learn about Ohio civics and the legislative process.” The school transportation grants will be available to any Ohio school that receives state funding. The grants are limited to Ohio students in the fourth through 12th grades during the 2017/2018 academic year. Only one transportation grant will be awarded to each school regardless of the number of buses or students visiting the Ohio Statehouse. A field trip to the Ohio Statehouse can be combined with visits to other educational attractions in downtown Columbus, including the Ohio Art Council’s Riffe Gallery, Columbus Museum of Art, COSI and the Ohio Judicial Center.

Only online applications will be accepted. All applications must be submitted by an authorized teacher or school administrator. Applications will be accepted until every grant is awarded.

The State of Ohio is known as the “Cradle of Presidents.” With eight men elected to the American Presidency, Ohio claims the most presidents. Join the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) for a family-friendly celebration of all dads, including the fathers of the United States who have called Ohio home. The event will take place Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Ohio Statehouse. The event is free and open to the public.

For the seventh consecutive year, the West Lawn (High Street) of the Ohio Statehouse will host vintage “base ball” (historically two words), as members of the 132^nd Ohio General Assembly (OGA) take on the Ohio Village Muffins Thursday, June 8, 2017. Reminiscent of barnstorming tours of yesteryear, the “titanic struggle” begins at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The two teams will be fighting for bragging rights and the all-important symbol of victory, the Richard Schuricht Memorial Cup. Prior to the game, the Statehouse’s 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A will provide a cannon firing demonstration and discussion of leisure activities Civil War soldiers would have used to pass the time in camp.
Additionally, Tracy Martin, baseball historian and member of the Muffins, will exhibit a portion of his massive collection of baseball equipment and ephemera. Martin’s collection highlights the evolution of the game and has been featured at theCincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, The Smithsonian National Museum of American History and The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Using vintage base ball equipment, the game is scheduled for seven innings and will be governed under The Rules and Regulations of the Game of Base Ball Adopted by the National Association of Base-Ball Players, March 14, 1860. Major rule differences between vintage base ball and modern baseball are listed below.

• The ball is pitched underhanded from anywhere behind the pitcher's line.

An out is declared if:

• A hit ball is caught on the fly or the first bound, including foul tips to the catcher.


• A base runner overruns any base (including first) and is touched by the ball in the hands of an adversary.

Enjoy an evening downtown, as you watch the Ohio General Assembly Capitol Cannons host the Ohio Village Muffins in an exhibition vintage base ball game. Come early and enjoy a ball park dinner. Concessions will be provided by the Paddy Wagon food truck.

About the Ohio Village Muffins and vintage base ball
Formed in 1981, the Ohio Village Muffins were the first vintage base ball team in America to play a set summer schedule, and the Muffins also hosted the founding meeting of the Vintage Base Ball Association (VBBA). The Muffins play in uniforms period correct to the 1860s; the uniform consists of plain long pants, a white shirt with a bright shield containing the team emblem, a pill box hat, a leather belt and a bow tie. Recreational activities, especially base ball, were becoming more ingrained in American society during the middle part of the 19th century. The Muffins represent a changing America and highlight a game that would transcend all others and become America’s National Pastime.
