STATEHOUSE NEWS

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will unveil a new piece of narrative art in the Ohio Statehouse for the first time in 59 years. The painting, “Greeting Lincoln,” was composed by artist Pamela Patrick White and will be unveiled Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the Ohio Statehouse. The painting depicts President-elect Lincoln addressing a joint session of the 54th Ohio General Assembly on February 13, 1861. The dedication will take place 157 years to the day that Lincoln visited the Ohio Statehouse for the second time in his political career.

“Lincoln’s 1861 visit was a historic event, and it is worthy of being memorialized on canvas. I hope visitors and legislators are inspired by this painting and the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln’s public service,” said CSRAB Chairman, Speaker Cliff Rosenberger.

The dedication program will take place Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the Hall of the Ohio House of Representatives. The program is free and open to the public.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a special art exhibit and free historical performance each Tuesday at noon.

The 2018 Rosa Parks Children’s Art Exhibit
, “The Power of One,” is a K-third grade student art exhibit sponsored by COTA. The exhibit is the students’ artistic expression of how they would change things for the better. Rosa Parks is honored because through her act of courage, she helped make America a better place for all people. Students were asked what would you do if you had a chance…To do a brave thing? A courageous thing? A kind thing? If nothing stood in your way, what would you do to change America and make it a better place for all people? The exhibit will be on display in the Map Room throughout the month of February.

Living history performances
will be presented each Tuesday at noon throughout February in the Atrium of the Ohio Statehouse. Visitors will meet first-person interpreters who portray prominent African Americans in U.S. history. Each 45-minute vignette will focus on African-American history as part of Black History Month at the Ohio Statehouse.

The programs are presented by “We’ve Known Rivers,” which is a partnership of dynamic storytellers with a passion for history and education. The programs are free and open to the public. Click here for more information about We’ve Known Rivers. The programs will be streamed live by the Ohio Channel. If you or your organization would like to schedule a group to attend a performance, please contact Katie Montgomery at 614-728-3726 or kmontgomery@ohiostatehouse.org.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board will unveil a wheelchair charging station on Capitol Square Thursday, November 16, 2017. A short program to outline the program will be held in the Governor Thomas Worthington Center at 1 p.m. followed by a dedication in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse, where the charger is located. A second charging station will be installed in the south penthouse of Capitol Square in the near future.

The funding for these charging stations came from a pilot program administered by National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and would not have been possible without the partnership of the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Adams County Health and Wellness Coalition. Information detailing the program can be found here.

“The Board sees these charging stations as a way to provide a more inclusive environment for the citizens of Ohio to access their government. We are grateful for the support and leadership that the NACDD, ODH and the Adams County Health and Wellness Coalition has provided for the project,” said CSRAB Chairman, Senator Bob Peterson.
