Flags at the Ohio Statehouse and all public buildings throughout Ohio will fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, October 7, 2018 in memory of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) in partnership with the Ohio History Connection, are excited to announce plans for the Ohio Constitution Exhibit to be housed in the Statehouse Museum. The exhibit will feature both the 1802 and 1851 Ohio constitutions on permanent public display at the Ohio Statehouse. Working together, this public private partnership has produced an exhibit that is the first of its kind in the United States. Utilizing the original documents in conjunction with visitor-interactive displays, the exhibit will answer the questions, what is the Ohio constitution, what does it do and how does it impact Ohioans in the 21^st century?

"Our Foundation and the CSRAB have been dedicated to enriching the experience of all who visit the Statehouse. Bringing the Ohio Constitution to the Museum for permanent display realizes a dream we have worked toward for more than a decade," said Charles R. Moses, CSF chairman. “This exhibit would not be possible without the collaboration and support provided by Ohio History Connection. Through conservation work and historical research, History Connection staff have contributed valuable content that all visitors will enjoy.”

“We are excited to make these historic documents more accessible for all Ohioans,” says Megan Wood, Ohio History Connection Director of Museum and Library Services. “In collaboration with our great partners at the Ohio Statehouse and CSRAB, we can connect visitors to the story of our state’s founding, helping them discover more of Ohio’s rich history.”

The Ohio Statehouse has incorporated several avenues of engagement for visitors to navigate as they visit the exhibit. The experience begins with pages from the original 1802 and 1851 Ohio constitutions. Archival, climate controlled display cases will house the constitutions on site and will allow museum staff to rotate pages in the exhibit in compliance with OHC archival guidelines. Supporting the documents are interactives focused on “Rights,” “Responsibilities” and “Constitution Stories.” The three experiences support the documents in answering the questions— what is the Ohio constitution, what does it do and how does it impact Ohioans in the 21st century?

“The Ohio Statehouse is grateful for the partnership with CSF and Ohio History Connection. This exhibit will educate Ohio students and visitors about the importance of these founding documents and how these documents impact their lives—the Statehouse is where Ohio civics and government come to life,” said Laura Battocletti, executive director of CSRAB. In addition to the new constitution exhibit, CSRAB and CSF foundation will update current museum displays and interior finishes. The current timeline has the Ohio Constitution Exhibit opening in late November of 2018.

Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff effective immediately (6 September 2018) through sunset Monday, September 10, 2018, in honor of the lives of the victims of the attack perpetrated on Thursday, September 6, 2018 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board has kicked off ticket sales for the 2018 edition of the Haunted Statehouse Tours. The special Halloween tours will take place Fri., Oct. 19, Sat., Oct. 20, Fri., Oct. 26 and Sat., Oct. 27. Tickets for the Haunted Statehouse Tours are $12 for adults and $6 for children under the age of 12. This is a ticketed event. Tickets must be pre-ordered.

Tours will depart every half hour between 7 and 9 p.m. Tour times are: 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m. Tickets are limited to 40 individuals per tour start. The 2018 edition of the Haunted Statehouse Tours will feature recently found evidence of paranormal activity at the Ohio Capitol and will incorporate a new story or two with an updated tour route.

Ohio Statehouse staff members and volunteers will combine history and legend in this special family-friendly haunted Ohio Statehouse tour. Conductors will lead visitors through the dimly lit limestone corridors of the Ohio Statehouse by lantern. This historical tour is spooky and most appropriate for individuals nine and older.

Arrive early and write a “Ghost Post” to one of the Statehouse’s resident spirits, or enjoy art activities prior to your tour. The Statehouse Museum Shop will be open throughout the evening and will offer special Halloween merchandise available for purchase. More information is available at statehouseshop.com.

Visitors to the Ohio Statehouse are invited to park in the facility's underground parking garage. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will commemorate the attacks of September 11, 2001 with a memorial flag display on the west lawn of the Ohio Statehouse. Monday, September 10 a short program will begin at 5 p.m. on the west steps of the Ohio Statehouse and will feature representatives from the following partner organizations: the CSRAB, HandsOn Central Ohio, Columbus City Council and the Columbus Fire Department. After the program, volunteers from across central Ohio will install the 2,977 flags that comprise the memorial.

Since 2002 CSRAB has partnered with HandsOn Central Ohio and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency to display the 2,977 U.S. Flags that comprise the memorial. The flags represent the 2,977 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93. When seen from above, the design represents the World Trade Center towers, with a space in the shape of the Pentagon and an open strip representing the field in Pennsylvania. Located on the West Lawn of the Ohio Statehouse, the memorial will be open to the public from 7 p.m. Monday, September 10 until 5 p.m. Thursday, September 13.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) are pleased to announce that 75 school transportation grants will be awarded for the 2018/2019 academic year. The online application process will open Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 9 a.m. The grants will be made available to help schools defray bus transportation costs for field trips to the Ohio Statehouse and its museum. Each grant will be based on one-way mileage from the visiting school to Columbus.

The program was created in 2009 by the Capitol Square Foundation. Since inception, more than 75,000 students from all 88 Ohio counties have visited the Ohio Statehouse with the assistance of these grants. “The Foundation is grateful for the continued financial support from Honda of America," said Charles Moses, Capitol Square Foundation Chairman. “We are thrilled that so many students can visit the Ohio Statehouse through this initiative!"

25 grants will be awarded in each of three mileage categories. The mileage categories are for a one-way trip from the visiting school to the Ohio Statehouse.

The three mileage categories include:

• 1 to 50 miles, $200.00


• 51 to 100 miles, $300.00


• 101+ miles, $400.00

Each category will be closed once the 25 available grants have been awarded. All grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

"The transportation grant program provides thousands of Ohio school children with a learning experience here at the Ohio Statehouse," said Laura P. Battocletti, CSRAB executive director. “The Statehouse is the perfect place to learn about Ohio civics and the legislative process.” The school transportation grants will be available to any Ohio school that receives state funding. The grants are limited to Ohio students in the fourth through 12th grades during the 2018/2019 academic year. Only one transportation grant will be awarded to each school regardless of the number of buses or students visiting the Ohio Statehouse. A field trip to the Ohio Statehouse can be combined with visits to other educational attractions in downtown Columbus, including the Ohio Art Council’s Riffe Gallery, Columbus Museum of Art, COSI and the Ohio Judicial Center.

Only online applications will be accepted. All applications must be submitted by an authorized teacher or school administrator. Applications will be accepted until every grant is awarded.
