Briefly told:
He began as editor of a weekly newspaper in Xenia.
He covered this State House and the 54th General Assembly for three newspapers in 1861.
He won fame as a Civil War correspondent for the Cincinnati Gazette and as the historian of "Ohio in the War."
He succeeded Horace Greeley as editor and publisher of the New York Tribune.
