Brides and grooms-to-be and their guests are invited to participate in one of several free Ohio Statehouse Wedding Tours to be held throughout January and February.

Wedding tour dates and times include:
Thursday, January 10 7 p.m.
Sunday, January 13 3 p.m.
Thursday, January 24 7 p.m.
Thursday, January 31 7 p.m.
Sunday, February 10 3 p.m.

The tours are free, and parking in the Statehouse’s underground parking garage will be validated for those that attend. Each tour will depart from the Map Room on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse.

The wedding tours are designed to highlight the Ohio Statehouse wedding program, the beautiful venues and the services provided by each of the Ohio Statehouse caterers. Each tour will last about an hour.

The Ohio Statehouse will also participate in the 2013 Columbus Bride Show on January 5 and 6 at Veterans Memorial. The Ohio Statehouse will be featured in booth #73.

The Ohio Statehouse Wedding tours are perfect for prospective brides, grooms and their guests, wedding planners and coordinators who are searching for a wedding ceremony and/or reception venue. The Ohio Statehouse wedding tours will be led by the facilities’ wedding coordinator and will provide and opportunity to see the beauty that the Statehouse offers to a wedding ceremony and/or reception.

The Ohio Statehouse, with its obvious grandeur, is the perfect wedding location – an experience that will be unparalleled. The elegance of the Ohio Statehouse captures the most esthetically pleasing dream. The Statehouse embodies the perfect locale for a wedding ceremony and reception with its Greek Revival architecture and appealing exterior landscape.

The Ohio Statehouse wedding program began in 2007 after members of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board approved the rules, guidelines and procedures in late 2006.

Visitors are invited to tour, shop and sing their way through Capitol Square this December at the Ohio Statehouse. The December celebration will include special holiday tours, concerts and the annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Festival.

Tree Lighting and Holiday Festival
The Ohio Statehouse will hold its Tree Lighting and Holiday Festival on Monday, December 3. The free and public event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Guests will welcome Santa when he arrives at the Ohio Statehouse at 5:30 p.m. on the West Plaza lawn (High Street side). For children and adults of all ages, the family-friendly festival will also include holiday music sung by a variety of choirs, a Santa and Mrs. Claus photo station, activities, games, displays, special performances, refreshments and much more!

Refreshments are courtesy of Tim Horton’s, the Heartland Council of the Girl Scouts, the Ohio Statehouse exclusive caterers and Cabot Creamery.


Unique Holiday Gifts and Candy Cane Sale
The Statehouse Museum Shop, located on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse, specializes in unique holiday gifts with an Ohio or political theme. Most gifts are made by Ohio artists or businesses, and many items are exclusive to the Museum Shop. Gifts range from wine and pottery to lapel pins and clothing. The Museum Shop is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Gifts can also be purchased online at www.statehouseshop.com.

Ohio Statehouse visitors are invited to stop by the Statehouse Museum Shop during the annual “Candy Cane Sale,” December 3 to 8. Visitors will have an opportunity to draw a candy cane and receive a discount from 10 to 40 percent off their entire purchase of unique, Ohio merchandise made by Ohio artists and businesses.

The following exclusions do apply: Wine, Consignment Items, Rookwood Pottery tiles, Ohio Statehouse: A Building for the Ages, indoor flag sets and all Statehouse Holiday Ornaments. Not to be combined with any other discounts. Sale limited to quantities on hand.


Holiday Tours Featuring Victorian Decorations
The holidays are a perfect time for visiting friends and family to take a trip to the People’s House for a holiday tour on Capitol Square. Guests are invited to “step back in time” during a free guided tour of the 1861 Statehouse and see holiday decorations the way they were in Victorian times. Walk-in tours of the Statehouse meet in the Map Room, easily accessible from the Third Street entrance, on the hour on weekdays at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., and weekends at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. There will be no noon tour during weekdays due to the free noon holiday performances. The Statehouse will be closed on December 25 in observance of Christmas and January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.

Free Noon Holiday Performances
Visitors are invited to enjoy the holiday season with free lunch-time concerts. Weekdays from December 4 to December 18, Ohio musical groups are scheduled to perform songs of the season at noon in the Museum Gallery on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse. The concerts are free and open to the public.

The 2012 Ohio Statehouse Tree Lighting and Holiday Festival marks the beginning of the holiday season on Capitol Square and throughout Ohio. This year’s celebration will take place on Monday, December 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A short tree lighting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. on the west steps (High Street side) of the Statehouse. First Lady Karen Kasich, and daughters Emma and Reese, are scheduled to attend and participate in the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.

For children and adults of all ages, this family-friendly festival will also include holiday music sung by a variety of choirs, a Santa and Mrs. Claus photo station, activities, games, displays, special performances and refreshments. The free and public Tree Lighting and Holiday Festival invites families from across the Buckeye State to join together at their State Capitol to rekindle holiday cheer and state pride.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board and Capitol Square Foundation are seeking nominations for the 2013 class of “Great Ohioans.” The award commemorates special Ohioans who have played a significant role in an event, or series of events, of lasting significance in World, American or Ohio history. Additional criteria include being born in Ohio or lived in Ohio for a minimum of five years. At least 25 years must have passed since the commemorated event, in which the nominee participated.

This award is an opportunity to recognize Ohioans who have made an impact in a number of important areas. A complete explanation of the nomination process and nomination forms can be found online at www.ohiostatehouse.org or http://www.capitolsquarefoundation.org/Great_Ohioan.htm.

All Ohioans, including teachers and students, are encouraged to participate in the nomination process.

Since 2003, 30 Great Ohioans have been recognized with the award for the special roles they played in history. The Great Ohioans include;

2003 Class: Orville and Wilbur Wright, inventors; John Glenn, first American to orbit the earth; and Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon;

2008 Class: Jesse Owens, Olympic track and field star; Thomas Edison, inventor; Harriet Beecher Stowe, author; James Thurber, journalist and author; Colonel Charles Young, military leader; and Dr. George Crile, founder of the Cleveland Clinic;

2009 Class: Catherine Nelson Black, health care humanitarian; Salmon P. Chase, Ohio Governor, Secretary of the Treasury and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice; Paul Laurence Dunbar, poet and author; Charles F. Kettering, inventor; Eddie Rickenbacker, World War I fighter ace; and Denton T. “Cy” Young, baseball legend.

2012 Class: Gordon Battelle, philanthropist and researcher, Dominic Salavtore “Don” Gentile, World War II fighter pilot; Washington Gladden, clergyman and social reformer; Albert Belmont Graham, founder of the 4-H program; Albert Sabin, medical researcher best known for the oral polio vaccine; and William T. Sherman, Civil War general.

A special exhibit in the Ohio Statehouse Museum pays tribute to all Great Ohioan Award recipients. The Great Ohioans exhibit presents recipients of the Great Ohioan award on a large touch monitor. A host of options are available for visitors to explore the life and accomplishments of each recipient. While countless Ohioans have performed great actions for their community and beyond, only a select few have been named a “Great Ohioan.” The exhibit allows visitors to have a greater understanding of the recipients of the Great Ohioan award and discover how they affected local, national and world history. The exhibit uses video, photos, facts and web based technology to explore the life and legacy of each Great Ohioan. The Capitol Square Foundation has raised more than $5 million in private donations for the new museum and enhanced education programming at the Ohio Statehouse.

Its purpose is to raise funds to obtain, restore and maintain artifacts and other items related to the history and enhancement of this grand monument and its adjoining grounds, so that the seat of Ohio's government may reflect the dignity of the state and its citizens.

Haunted Statehouse Tour tickets are still available for the annual Halloween themed tours. The special evening tours will take place during two weekends in October: Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13; and Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20.

Each tour will last approximately an hour. Available tour times include: 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are limited to 40 individuals per tour time each night. This event has sold out during the previous seven years.

Tickets for the Haunted Statehouse Tours are $12 per adult and $6 per child under the age of 12. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Statehouse;

The Ohio Statehouse is the only known statehouse in the country to hold such an event. Haunted Statehouse Tour participants will have a “haunted and historical experience” in Ohio’s Capitol building. Statehouse staff members and volunteers will combine history and legend in this special family-friendly haunted Statehouse tour. Conductors will lead visitors through the dimly lit limestone corridors of the Ohio Statehouse by oil lantern light. Visitors will pass the ghost of President Lincoln in an unfinished dance with Kate Chase (former Ohio Governor Salmon P. Chase’s daughter), hear and see a weeping lady in gray and get a glimpse of a green and ghostly President felled by an assassin’s bullet. This historical tour is spooky but appropriate for all members of the family. The tour is most suitable for individuals over the age of 12.

Special activities will be available to participate in before each tour. The Statehouse Museum shop will be open throughout the evening and will offer candy apples, Halloween candy and caramel corn, cookies and soda for purchase. The Ohio Statehouse will recognize Earth Science Week by offering a FREE fossil tour on Capitol Square. The special tour will take place on Friday, October 12 from noon until 1 p.m. The tour will depart from the Map Room, located on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse. Participants will explore the building stones that make up the Ohio Statehouse and Senate Office Building. The tour will be conducted by expert geologist Dale M. Gnidovic, curator of the OSU Orton Geological Museum. The tour will focus on the "Building Stones of Capitol Square." For more information, visit www.earthsciweek.org. The Ohio Statehouse is constructed of Columbus Limestone. Columbus Limestone is of the Middle Devonian age and was named for the city where it has long been quarried. The Columbus Limestone crops out in a north-south line from Kelleys Island in Lake Erie to south of Columbus. The limestone was formed in a clear, shallow, tropical sea that covered the state almost 400 million years ago. Fossils of marine animals are abundant in the Columbus Limestone and can be seen throughout the Capitol Square complex.

Free guided tours are offered weekdays on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and weekends from noon to 3 p.m. Tours depart from the Map Room easily accessible from the Third Street entrance. The Ohio Statehouse is handicapped accessible and senior friendly. The Capitol Square complex was restored to allow for greater access by individuals living with disabilities. Ohio Statehouse public programs and events are held in accessible and barrier free areas of the building so that everyone can participate.
