Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff from Friday, July 8 until sunset Sunday, July 12, 2016 in honor of the lives and service of the police officers killed in the line of duty Thursday, July 7, 2016 in Dallas, Texas.

Governor Kasich’s order reads:

"In accordance with orders issued today by the President of the United States of America and to honor the lives and service of the police officers killed in the line of duty on Thursday, July 7, 2016, in Dallas, Texas, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio effective immediately until sunset, July 12, 2016."

In recognition of the United States presidential election of 2016, the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center, in partnership with the American Political Items Collectors, will showcase treasures from the political careers of Ohio’s eight presidents and their campaigns.

While the campaign button is the most recognized and widely collected of all campaign objects, the exhibit also includes rare vintage political ribbons, ferrotypes, glassware, autographs, books, textiles, ephemera, posters, medals, tokens, postcards, pennants, sheet music and photography. Campaign artifacts range from matchbooks to street banners and everything in between!

“Ohio has long played an import role in presidential politics. Every four years presidential campaigns crisscross the Buckeye State and thrust Ohio into the national spotlight. This is an opportunity to see the campaigns materials that made Ohio the ‘Mother of Presidents,’” said Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board Executive Director Laura P. Clemens. The exhibit is located in the south hallway (State Street entrance) of the Ohio Statehouse and will be on display through September 30, 2016.

Ohio’s Presidents include: William Henry Harrison (1841), Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877), Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881), James A. Garfield (1881), Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), William McKinley (1897-1901), William Howard Taft (1909-1913) and Warren G. Harding (1921-1923).

The American Political Items Collectors (APIC) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting the collection, preservation and study of materials relating to political campaigns and the U.S. presidency. Founded in 1945, the APIC serves a growing hobby. Membership includes collectors and enthusiasts from all walks of life and nearly every occupation. The APIC cooperates with the Smithsonian, presidential libraries, homes, birthplaces and museums, national and local media as well as colleges and universities to facilitate the understanding of American politics using the artifacts of political campaigns. Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset June 24, 2016 in honor of the life and service of former State Representative Bill Hartnett.

Governor Kasich’s order reads:
" In honor of the life and service of former director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and former State Representative Bill Hartnett, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Richland County and at the Ohio Statehouse from sunrise to sunset on June 24, 2016."

Members of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will meet Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus, OH. The business meeting will be held in the State Room (room #108) and will begin at 10 a.m. The meeting is open to the public. The meeting agenda is available upon request.

Ohio Statehouse Flag Lowering: June 13 to June 17, 2016
Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff until sunset on June 17, 2016 in honor of the life of George V. Voinovich.
Governor Kasich’s order reads:
"In honor of the life and service of former United States Senator, Governor, and Mayor of the City of Cleveland George V. Voinovich, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio effective immediately until sunset, June 17, 2016.”

Ohio Statehouse Flag Lowering: June 12 to June 16, 2016
Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff from June 12 until sunset on June 16, 2016 in honor of the lives lost in Orlando, Florida.

Governor Kasich’s order reads:
"In accordance with orders issued today by the President of the United States of America and as a mark of respect for the victims of the act of hatred and terror perpetrated in Orlando, Florida, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio effective immediately until sunset, June 16, 2016."

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) is proud announce the acceptance of a $2,000 grant from The Little Garden Club of Columbus. The grant was used to purchase flowers that have been planted on Veterans Plaza and the Statehouse grounds. The flower pattern will form the American and Ohio flags.

“We are extremely grateful to the Little Garden Club of Columbus for their generous donation. The Club’s support enhances the Capitol Square for all Ohioans to enjoy-–CSRAB is proud of our partnership that continues to bear beautiful fruit,” said William E. Carleton, executive director of CSRAB.

The Little Garden Club of Columbus’ commitment to Capitol Square will ensure that the Ohio Statehouse continues to be a symbol of elegance and grandeur for the people of Ohio. The Ohio Statehouse grounds serves as a prominent green oasis in the heart of the capital city. More than 100 plant species are maintained on the grounds; including a variety of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals.

Situated on 10 acres in the heart of downtown Columbus, with the backdrop of the magnificent Greek Revival Capitol building, the Ohio Statehouse grounds encompass expansive pastoral green spaces, flower gardens and sculpture honoring Ohio’s past. The grounds continue to serve as a gathering place for both historic rallies and everyday events.

The Ohio Statehouse today announced the 2016 Summer Fridays at the Statehouse schedule of performances. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) has partnered with 12 central Ohio performing arts groups to present, Summer Fridays at the Statehouse. Summer Fridays is a FREE outdoor lunch-time performing arts series staged on the West Plaza (High Street) of the historic Ohio Statehouse. Summer Fridays at the Statehouse provides an opportunity for the public and downtown community to gather on Capitol Square to experience some of Columbus’ diverse arts groups and to visit the beautiful Ohio Capitol.

This year’s participating performing arts groups include a diverse cross section of central Ohio’s arts organizations.

Summer Fridays at the Statehouse will take place Fridays, June 3 through August 26 (absent July 1). The programs will run between noon and 1 p.m. The series gives the downtown community and visitors the opportunity to enjoy the majestic Statehouse grounds while some of Columbus’ best arts groups perform. There is no better place downtown to enjoy your lunch this summer!

Visitors are encouraged to bring their lunch or purchase lunch from one of the food trucks scheduled for lunch service during each Friday concert.

Performances will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. Up to the minute performance information about Summer Fridays at the Statehouse will be posted on the front page of the Ohio Statehouse website at ohiostatehouse.org. Summer Fridays at the Statehouse audience members are encouraged to visit the Statehouse website each morning of the scheduled performances to retrieve last minute performance information.
