Edith Mayer was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1977 and then elected for two consecutive terms. She served on the following House committees:
-Education,
-Local Government, and
-Commerce and Labor.
Prior to holding this position, Mayer was president of the Greenhills-Forest Park Board of Education. Additionally, she was involved in Cincinnati Business and Professional Women, the Ohio Republican Party, the National Organization of Women Legislators, and the National Republican Legislators Association. She also was honored with the All-Ohio School Board award for exemplary service, Outstanding Contribution to Education by a Layperson Award by the Southwestern Ohio Education Association, and the Washington Institute for Women in Politics award for the nation's top 50 women legislators for 1978.
