Statehouse & Civil War Sesquicentennial Events : Siege Of Vicksburg: The Gibraltar Of The West Falls
The brutal Vicksburg Civil War campaign changed the course of American history. Key players of the Vicksburg campaign included Ohioans Ulysses S. Grant & William T. Sherman, as well as John C. Pemberton, Joseph E. Johnston, David Dixon Porter, John S. Bowen, John A. McClernand, Stephen D. Lee and James B. McPherson.

The campaign lasted from May 18, 1863 and ended on July 4. 1863 when the Confederate Army surrendered. This victory yielded command of the Mississippi River to the Union forces, who would hold it for the rest of the conflict.

Luke Stedke of the Capitol Square Review & Advisory Board presents this talk in front of the Lincoln-Vicksburg Memorial in the Rotunda of the Ohio Statehouse.
