Lulu Thomas Gleason was the first woman to be elected from Lucas County to the Ohio House of Representatives, serving from 1922 until 1924, while also performing temperance work.
Gleason’s campaign was managed by an all-female staff and enjoyed support from the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Republican Party. Gleason was also involved with women’s clubs while in Toledo, participating in the Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Samagama Club, the Toledo Women’s Club, and the League of Women Voters.
During the 100th anniversary of the 19th Ammendment to the U.S. Constitution, Gleason was named a Great Ohioan in 2020.
