Cannon firing in downtown Columbus
Please be informed that a Civil War-era cannon will be fired from the West Plaza of the Ohio Statehouse Monday, April 29, 2024.
As part of the Ohio Statehouse’s commemoration of Lincoln’s Repose, historical reenactors from 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A will fire one of the Ohio Statehouse’s Civil War-era cannons from the West Plaza (High Street side) of Capitol Square at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12 p.m., 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Some historic musket firing may be heard at the same times.
As these sounds can be startling, we wish to give advance notice to everyone working on and near Capitol Square. If you have any questions, please contact Mike Rupert at 614-728-4185.
This event is part of the Statehouse’s Civil War Encampment, which immerses visitors in Civil War activities. Attendees can see a historic flag from the era, view a replica coffin where President Lincoln lay in repose years ago, and witness reenacted depictions of 1860s life. In case of rain, the times may be changed, and the reenactor’s exhibits will be inside the Ohio Statehouse.
