William Allen was born in Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina in 1807. He died in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1879. The orphaned William Allen left his native North Carolina for Chillicothe, Ohio at the age of 16, walking every step of the way with all of his earthly possessions tied in a handkerchief. Here he found his sister living, and attended the old Chillicothe Academy. He studied law with Colonel Edward King and in 1832 was elected to Congress as a Democrat by a majority of one. In 1837 he was elected to the U.S. Senate and, during a twelve year stint there, became a prominent member of that body. William Allen was elected Governor of Ohio in 1873 and took office in 1874. He was said to be a great orator.
