Located on the South Plaza (State Street) The employees of the Davey Tree Expert Company presented the State of Ohio an American elm tree in 1939 to honor their employer and governor, Martin Davey, who served as Ohio governor from 1935 to 1939. Davey Tree Plaque IN JANUARY 1939 THIS AMERICAN ELM WAS PLANTED AND PRESENTED TO THE STATE OF OHIO IN HONOR OF GOVERNOR MARTIN L. DAVEY BY ON THOUSAND EMPLOYEES OF THE DAVEY TREE EXPER CO. OF KENT, OHIO. IT IS A LIVING TRIBUTE TO A GREAT STATE AND TO A KINDLY MAN, WHO ALTHOUGH CALLED AWAY FROM HIS EMPLOYEES TO SERVE HIS STATE AS COVERNOR FROM 1938 TO 1939, STILL RETAING THEIR CONSTANT, DEEP AFFECTION AND LOYALTY THROUGH HIS MANY ACTS OF THOUGHTFUL CONSIDERATION.
