In honor of the life and service of former Ohio Adjutant General Richard C. Alexander, the flags shall be flown at half-staff at the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower from sunrise to sunset on the day of his funeral, May 30, 2024. All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) wants you and your department to be aware that hot water may be discolored in the Ohio Statehouse and Senate Building. The situation should be resolved within a few days.

A plumbing pump was fixed. It may take 48 hours for any discoloration in the hot water to clear through the system. We thank you for your patience during this process.

As part of the Governor’s annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor of Memorial Day, military aircraft will conduct a flyover of downtown Columbus and the Ohio Statehouse on Thursday, May 23 between 11 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. The flyover will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force through Wright Patterson Air Force Base’s 445th Airlift Wing.

The public event will include a rifle salute at the Ohio Statehouse on the Third Street Veterans Plaza. The rifle salute is provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Since these sounds and the low flying aircraft can be startling, we wish to give advance notice to our Statehouse residents and neighbors on Capitol Square.
This event is part of honoring Ohio’s fallen heroes on Memorial Day weekend. The Governor’s Wreath Laying ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. on the Third Street side of the Ohio Statehouse and may be viewed live on OhioChannel.org.

In honoring Peace Officer Memorial Day and Police Week, Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio from sunrise to sunset on May 15, 2024.

Please be informed that a Civil War-era cannon will be fired from the West Plaza of the Ohio Statehouse Wednesday, May 22, 2024. This will be done as part of the vintage base ball game. The event is free and open to the public. The Feed Your Soul Kitchen food truck will be at the corner of High Street and State Street at 5:30 p.m.

Civil War cannon firing demonstrations are scheduled to take place in the evening between 5:25 and 8 p.m. The Statehouse cannon may fire a maximum of three times during the event.

Columbus, OH– On Wednesday, May 22, the Ohio Village Muffins and Lady Diamonds will face off against the Capitol Cannons, state senators and representatives, in an old-fashioned game of “base ball.” The match will go from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Ohio Statehouse West Lawn, and it is free and open to the public.

Before and after the two teams square off to win the Richard Schuricht Memorial Cup, the Statehouse’s 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A will provide cannon firing demonstrations. History displays and concessions will also be available to the public.

This exhibition game involves rules and regulations from the 1860s that Abe Lincoln himself observed, so some of them might appear unconventional. There are a few major differences between “base ball” and baseball that the audience should be aware of:

• · The ball is pitched underhand from anywhere behind the pitcher’s line.


• · If a ball is hit and caught on a bounce, it is an out.


• · Base runners may not steal nor slide foot-first.

Experience the entertaining seven-inning affair, enjoy an outdoor meal and witness cannon firings all in one night. Food and beverages will be provided by the Feed Your Soul Kitchen food truck and Milo’s Catering.

About the Ohio Village Muffins and Vintage “Base Ball”
Formed in 1981, the Ohio Village Muffins were the first vintage “base ball” team in the United States to play a set schedule of games. They also hosted the initial meeting of the Vintage Base Ball Association (VBBA). The uniforms are standard to the 1860s: plain pants, a white shirt with a bright shield containing the team emblem, a vintage cap, a leather belt and a red tie. Recreational activities for men and women, especially “base ball,” were becoming more ingrained in American society during the middle of the 19th century, so the Muffins represent a changing America. They highlight a game that would transcend all others and become America’s favorite pastime.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)— In honor of the life and service of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin, Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Cuyahoga County and at the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus today until sunset on the day of his funeral.

All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.

As part of the Ohio Statehouse’s commemoration of Lincoln’s Repose, historical reenactors from 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A will fire one of the Ohio Statehouse’s Civil War-era cannons from the West Plaza (High Street side) of Capitol Square at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12 p.m., 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Some historic musket firing may be heard at the same times.

This event is part of the Statehouse’s Civil War Encampment, which immerses visitors in Civil War activities. Attendees can see a historic flag from the era, view a replica coffin where President Lincoln lay in repose years ago, and witness reenacted depictions of 1860s life.
